ULLAS

The Ministry of Education recently hosted a ‘Volunteering for ULLAS’ workshop on October 7 to address the efforts of young volunteers from Teacher Education Institutions (TEIs) towards full literacy in India and facilitate the achievement of the objectives of the National Education Policy 2020.

The virtual workshop was led by Sanjay Kumar, Secretary of Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSE&L). He convened it with students from any teacher education institution affiliated to NCTE. “Each section of society must be targeted in the quest for this cause. And special attention has to be given to under-served areas,” urged Kumar in his speech. He said students need to be guided and supported at their respective institutions, which will make it easier for the students to register on the ULLAS App.

Notable guests present in the workshop were Joint Secretary at DoSE&L Archana Sharma Awasthi, Prof. Pankaj Arora, Chairperson of NCTE, Kesang Y. Sherpa, Member Secretary of NCTE, Director Preeti Meena of DoSE&L, and other officers, who are part of the DoSE&L. Awasthi presented a workshop agenda titled ‘ULLAS: Nav Bharat Literacy Programme.’ She exhorted students and teachers to indulge in social service initiatives.  Prof. Pankaj Arora also reminded NCTE’s commitment to achieving ‘Viksit Bharat’ by attaining ‘Jan Saakshar’. Kesang Y. Sherpa unveiled that for the session 2023-24, NCTE has instructed all TEIs to bring 8-10 students under the ULLAS scheme, engaging them for becoming volunteer teachers and taking part in national development activities. Students attending these events could earn two credits for their community engagement and service pertaining to the ULLAS-New India Literacy Programme (NILP), NSS, and other community activities.

Preeti Meena also made a consolidative presentation on the enrollment processes undertaken for ULLAS in the TEIs. The session involved induction of over 18,000 TEIs, faculty members, and student-teachers into the programme.
