UP Govt Stalls Enactment of Digital Attendance System for 2 Months Amid Rising Teachers’ Objections

Digital Attendance

The Uttar Pradesh government has decided to suspend its order for digital attendance of teachers until further notice, following widespread protests by government school teachers across the state.

An expert committee will be formed to address the issues and suggestions of teachers, said MK Shanmuga Sundaram, principal secretary of basic education, UP, on Tuesday. The committee will include education department officials, members of teachers’ unions, and educationists. It will consider all aspects of education and provide recommendations for improvement. The decision regarding teachers’ digital attendance will be based on the committee’s report.

Since July 8, the first day of implementing digital attendance, lakhs of teachers and “Shiksha Mitras” (para teachers) in government schools have strongly opposed the order. On July 8, only 2 percent of 6.09 lakh teachers recorded their attendance digitally, and even fewer did so on July 10. The protests intensified with teachers taking to the streets across the state.

“However, the order has now been postponed for two months, and the concerns of teachers will be addressed,” said the principal secretary over the phone.

A meeting was held between government officials from the education department and representatives of teachers’ organizations, led by chief secretary Manoj Kumar Singh. During the meeting, it was decided to form an expert committee to listen to the problems and suggestions of teachers.

“Earlier in the day, UP Primary School Teachers’ Association president Dinesh Chandra Sharma and other teachers’ leaders met chief secretary Manoj Kumar Singh,” an official said.

Principal secretary of basic education MK Shanmuga Sundaram, director general of school education Kanchan Verma, UP Primary School Teachers’ Association president Dinesh Chandra Sharma, and other senior officials were present at the meeting.
