Rice University launches Rice Global India Bengaluru Hub to Develop Partnerships for Innovation and Research

Rice University has inaugurated its new strategic initiative, Rice Global India, with the launch of a hub in Bengaluru, further deepening an already significant footprint in India’s fast-emerging education and technology industries. Through Rice Global India, Rice University signals its role as a fierce promoter of transnational innovation through leadership partnerships with top Indian institutions like the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, and the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru.

Bengaluru will be Rice University’s vibrant hub for collaborative research activities in areas as diverse as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, sustainable energy, and space studies. Rice University will cement its presence in the exciting Indian innovation ecosystem through faculty and student exchanges, co-research initiatives, and a wide range of other collaborative activities.

This expansion, too, echoes the vision to globalize the university as part of its plan known as Momentous: Personalized Scale for Global Impact.

Rice President Reginald Desrochers highlighted the importance of India in advancing research and education, emphasizing the country’s vast potential. The hub is also expected to facilitate collaborations with India’s Global Capability Centers (GCCs), reflecting Rice’s ambition to integrate more deeply into India’s high-tech and research landscape.

In addition to fostering academic partnerships, Rice University announced the Rice Excellence Scholarship to support Indian students pursuing professional master’s programs in disciplines like electrical engineering, biosciences, energy sustainability, and space studies. Rice also committed to a $2 million annual scholarship fund for Indian students, covering tuition and living expenses for eligible master’s and PhD candidates.

India’s rapid advancements in fields like climate change, AI, and biotechnology align closely with Rice’s strategic goals, making it a key partner in global research and technological development. Caroline Levander, Rice’s Vice President for Global, emphasized that the U.S.-India relationship provides a fertile foundation for expanding educational, technological, and research exchanges, offering new opportunities for collaboration that will shape the future of global innovation.
