President Droupadi Murmu, speaking at the 21st convocation ceremony of Symbiosis International (Deemed University) in Pune on Tuesday, underscored the need to encourage research in India’s education system. She emphasized that Indian research scholars have the capability to address not only national but global challenges, aligning with the focus of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which prioritizes research.

Murmu urged students to strive for excellence, advising them not to equate success with material possessions but to seek fulfillment in contributing to societal development, particularly for marginalized communities. She encouraged the use of government initiatives such as Start-Up India, Skill India, and Stand-Up India to achieve these goals.

Addressing the university’s faculty and alumni, the President called for the promotion of research, highlighting that years of dedicated research lead to significant inventions and solutions to various challenges. She noted that Symbiosis University is already advancing in areas like water resource management, stem cell research, nanoscience, and climate change through its multidisciplinary research centers.

In addition to her focus on research, President Murmu also spoke about the need to transform societal views on women. She stressed that India’s progress is closely tied to the socio-economic and educational development of women, who make up half of the country’s population. Addressing the centenary celebrations of the Maharashtra Legislative Council in Mumbai, she called for a shift in perspective towards women, especially in light of recent crimes against women.

Murmu praised historical figures like Veermata Jijabai and Savitribai Phule for their contributions to women’s empowerment and education, urging educational institutions to create a supportive environment for female students. She also commended the establishment of ‘Symbiosis Arogya Dham’ as a step towards enhancing medical services and called for value-based education that incorporates the latest technology to guide the younger generation.
